Reading in Key Stage 1

Reading has a high profile at Immanuel & St Andrew.  We take pride in our class book corners and each week children and classes from both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 visit out school library and choose from the vast range of stimulating books that are on offer.  Each year a significant amount of money is committed to the purchase of reading books and reading materials.

We use a variety of reading resources and materials to support the teaching of reading.  In Early Years and Key Sage 1, phonics is taught systematically using 'Jolly Phonics' and 'Letters and Sounds'.  We have a large stock of reading books from Ginn, Rigby Star and Harper Collins publishers, which are changed two times per week in Key Stage 1.  Parents are encouraged to read to their child each night as part of their homework.
